Amplify – about challenges for cultural cooperation

Motovila’s event First Steps Toward International Cooperation, organized in Murska Sobota on 25th August 2021, also included a discussion on the contribution of culture towards the future of Europe, which was part of the activities included in the European initiative AMPLIFY: Make the Future of Europe Yours.

Motovila engaged the participants in a conversation about the challenges that cultural organizations are facing in their local environment (eastern Slovenia, especially the region of Prekmurje), and the main challenges and obstacles that they need to overcome in order to encourage more international (cultural) cooperation in their environment. The speakers exposed several challenges, among which they emphasised especially the professionalisation and motivation of staff in the local environment, working in the cultural and creative sectors (both public and NGO), access to audiences (cultural education), and national co-funding schemes for projects supported by the EU programmes., access to audiences (cultural education), and national co-funding schemes for projects supported by the EU programmes.

The event was attended by representatives of public and private/non-governmental organizations from the regions of Pomurje, Podravje, and Gorenjska, who are active in the fields of public administration, youth, and culture (within the latter especially in the spheres of books, performing arts, cultural heritage, and intermedia arts).

Amplify is a project working across 12 European countries that brings underrepresented voices in the cultural sector to the Conference on the Future of Europe.

For Motovila, the Amplify campaign provides an opportunity to pinpoint both the challenges and the upsides of coexistence in the European Union at a time when people feel rather sceptical and negative towards the EU and its institutions. Amplify can therefore be a small contribution towards providing decision-makers with points of view that had been overlooked (including those from the cultural sector), which could help conceptualize a different future for the EU.
