MEDIA Celebrates 35 Years: Slovenian Film in the European Audiovisual Landscape

Our films travel across Europe. A short film carries elderly fruit growers from the Goriška region all the way to Rotterdam. In Berlin, a Slovenian film opens the competitive section for first features. A Slovenian director ventures into the highlands of North Macedonia and comes back with a story of shepherd brothers. A documentary about the Croatian city of Rijeka and its occupation emerges from a Slovenian minority co-production. A puppet animation with a Slovenian co-director and co-producer is brought to life by animators working on sets in Slovenia, France, the Czech Republic, and Slovakia. Do any of these stories still resonate?

Slovenian cinema is deeply interwoven with the European audiovisual landscape. Filmmakers train and make connections through European training programmes. At film markets, they pitch ideas for projects that are most often realised as international co-productions. Once completed, these films embark on the festival circuit and – with a little luck – find their way also into cinemas, travelling alongside their European companions. With even greater luck, that journey extends beyond Europe’s borders. Along this path, from first idea to audience, many film stories are carried by the support of Creative Europe – MEDIA.
