British musicians face growing barriers to EU touring after Brexit: why Creative Europe matters

A new survey by European Movement UK points to a significant decline in performances by British musicians in EU countries after Brexit.

Since 2021, more than a quarter of the musicians surveyed have lost all professional opportunities in the EU, while almost 60% say that touring in Europe is no longer financially viable for them. Key obstacles include visa rules, work permits, Schengen area limitations, customs procedures for transporting equipment, and higher touring costs.

The report also highlights the impact of the UK’s loss of access to Creative Europe. Between 2014 and 2020, the programme provided €111 million to UK organisations, supporting international cooperation, co-productions, research projects, professional fairs, and European networks. This example clearly shows that Creative Europe is not only a source of funding, but an essential infrastructure for cross-border cooperation, mobility, sectoral networking, and the long-term presence of artists and cultural organisations in the European cultural space.
